Our Gay Men’s Chorus of Fort Lauderdale Mission Statement

“The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus exists to build community through quality musical performances and civic engagement that promotes a world that accepts and values diversity.”

Founded in 1986: Fort Lauderdale,
Broward County, South Florida

Fort Lauderdale has always been a rapidly growing community,

and we’re growing our reach and our community focus with new venues beyond downtown, such as Pembroke Pines and Lauderhill, reaching out with performances in assisted senior living centers, combining with other Arts organizations, like the Broward Performing Arts Center, to commemorate historical LGBT events like Stonewall Fort Lauderdale Pride, and engaging together with LGBTQ High School youth and their allies.

We helped start the LGBTQ chorus movement 35 years ago, first named as “The South Florida Gay Men’s Chorus” in 1986.

with our nationally recognized founding Director, Dr. Gary Keating, who launched us in 1986 as the very first gay performing arts organization in the state of Florida, and one of the first in the nation and in the world. Our first name was “South Florida Gay Men’s Chorus.” Today, there are thousands such LGBTQ choruses globally and many of them are members of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (

The Gay Men’s Chorus of Fort Lauderdale has commissioned and performed several original musical works,

such as “Living Out Loud” a nine song cycle by gay composer Robert Seeley and his partner Robert Espindola, well-known for other GLBT compositions such as “Brave Souls and Dreamers” and “Naked Man”

Our gay Fort Lauderdale chorus prepares and presents quality musical productions

and challenging compositions with incredibly talented guest stars such as Broadway’s own Lisa Vroman, Martha Bartz, and Alexander Zenoz.

The Fort Lauderdale Florida Gay Men’s Chorus has performed at numerous South Florida civic events

including most recently for the Broward County Commission, at voter registration events, with the Stonewall Fort Lauderdale Pride Parade and at various senior living centers.

Broward County Commissioners invited the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus to perform before the entire Commission.

The Fort Lauderdale and surrounding Broward county community remains increasingly diverse.

We promote acceptance of the gifts brought by the “other” and value these differences by celebrating them:

Annually, we participate in the Christmas on Las Olas celebration and the Wilton Manors Holiday Tree lighting.   We commemorate historic LBGT events such as Stonewall’s 50th Anniversary by collaborating with various other regional arts organizations.

FTLGMC represents our gay Fort Lauderdale musical community and works together with LGBT youth groups

which share our vision of valuing diversity in our community, such as the Broward Performing Arts Center, the Broward Community Foundation, and the South Florida Gay News organizations.

The FTLGMC promotes acceptance and values diversity in our membership, sponsors, audiences, and the community-at-large. Pictured here at the Broward Performing Arts Center.
